Our Faith Can Be Seen Through Our Obedience
Obedience means hearing & following to a higher authority. In Greek, it means positioning oneself under someone who has higher power or authority. While in the New Testament, it is defined as "To trust"; to hear or read God's word and act accordingly.
There are eight reasons why obedience is important.
First, obedience is important simply because Jesus calls us to be obedient. “If you love me, keep my commands." John 14:15. Because He taught us how to love, we, too, are capable of loving. And so, if we love Him, we must obey Him as it is said in John 14:15. We, Christians are designed to obey. You are designed to obey.
The second reason is, obedience is an act of worship. Worship is not just for Sundays. Worship is a lifestyle. It is an every day act. Worship comes along with gratitude (giving thanks), and obedience starts with that gratitude. When we obey God, we are showing gratitude to Him and at the same time worshiping Him in terms of obedience. For us to be obedient, we must start with a heart of gratitude. "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." Romans 12:1, Let us give our bodies to God for everything He has done to us. We must obey Him to bring back all the praises & worship He deserves.
Obedience is important because, thirdly, God rewards obedience. He rewards those who obey Him. Obeying God is not a burden or an additional responsibility for us. In fact, it is more of a blessing for us, because God rewards those who obey Him. "and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” Genesis 22:18, "Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession." Exodus 19:5, and "He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”" Luke 11:28.
The fourth reason why obedience is important is because it proves our love for God. "This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands." 1 John 5:2. If we love Him, we will obey Him.
Obedience to God demonstrates our faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please the Lord. Like in a family, when a child is obedient to his or her parents, it is easier to please them rather than a child who has no sense of obedience at all.
Obedience is better than sacrifice. It is far better to follow what is right and in accordance to His plans & will rather than to risk your life and become disappointed at the end. It is better to obey His commands for they will never lead you to bad things, than to sacrifice a lot of things in your life like your time, friends, and families, just to satisfy your own plans or desires.
"“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”" 1 Samuel 15:22-23.
Also, obedience is important because disobedience leads to sin and death. Who would ever want & enjoy sin and death? We definitely should not. If we know already what is right, we must follow it instead of doubting it! Why? Because failure to follow or do what is right, is already a form of disobedience and a form of sin.
Lastly, obedience is important because it leads to life. It leads to the everlasting life that God has promised to those who has accepted Him and obeyed Him.
"1 Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. 2 Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart— 3 they do no wrong but follow his ways. 4 You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. 5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! 6 Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. 7 I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. 8 I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me." (Psalm 119:1-8)
Through obedience, we experience the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Why? Because God sees us as righteous. He sees us as deserving.
"Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." 2 Corinthians 7:1.
